I am starting 2010 with the intent to reach out more to a wider audience, travel more while working, and genuinely bring fun with me wherever I go. Because Magickal Things now has a location in Culpeper I intend to be a part of the community events and participate as much as I am able to do. I also intend to Travel more with my personal art and design.

While Magickal Things has turned into a product line and retail art Boutique, Marjorie Dulaney’s art has transcended to include themes and styles that compliment fantasy art but are not exclusively so. Over the summer I paint a great deal with a more contemporary style and universal meditative themes. My most recent project that will continue is my tribute to the Master Artists of the Renaissance period. For this project I am working in CHARCOAL exclusively. this project is intend to look like the sketches of the masters paintings. Charcoal is one of the oldest drawing implements. It never fades though it is delicate on paper. these designs will then be reproduced onto fabrics and textiles. Like peasant blouses and tapestries and bed linens. This project is dear to me because charcoal was my first successful medium and it kept me drawing.

In order to separate the artist from the merchandise end of the business I have decided to start “TREE OF LIFE” art and design by marjorie dulaney. This way I am not limited to the genre of art I choose to create. Magickal Things will still produce merchandise by hand but the retail may include outside sources where as Tree of Life is Exclusively Marjorie Dulaney’s Creations. I will probably have some retail items at a show under “Tree of Life” but the focus will be on the art.

While I am going to travel more this year I am also interested in participating in all local town events. This means I will be available for face painting on fun days and I really do want to have an exhibit in the local 4th of July parade . I may need volunteers for this. I just want my town to be as fun and magickal as possible. For us all to have a sense of wonder and hope and joy.

What to Do in Culpeper December 25 2009

Culpeper Virginia can be a great little town to experience. Away from the crowded cities and surrounded by beautiful Mountains, Culpeper allows you to experience rural America with some Country sophistication in the downtown area. Many upscale Boutique Hotels are located downtown with some great gourmet resturaunts. Affordably priced hotels are also located within town limits with convenient locations to grocery stores and casual dinning.

Culpeper’s resturants are diverse. There are the regular chains, but there are also some great family owned and run resturants, cafes, and diners. We have a close nit community. Merchants in Culpeper take pride in there town and contribute to many local programs. When you eat at one of these establishments you are keeping our town’s character and adding to the abiance.

Local Music exists alive and well in Culpeper and the surrounding areas. A short drive can lead you to some great local music. Local artists work can also be seen in may of the resturants and Community buliding. Downtown also has it’s share of art galleries and craft boutiques.

Which leads us to Locust street across from the Movie Theater. That is where Magickal Things studio and art boutique rests nestled in the Medical Arts Building. This small Boutique is owner operated by Marjorie Dulaney. This is a place where an ecclectic mix of art, handcrafted items, socially consious products, and esoteric supplies collide. Everything from elegant hand dyed garments to fairy wings and incense. Bellydance gear and Beatles key chains. Handmade jewelry and sage. Crystal balls and fortune bamboo. Tapestries and Sunglasses. This store is all about having fun looking around an intamate space that has been describe as like going into the back of a gypsy wagon. The owner encourages browsing and enjoying the wares. she also encourages others to create.

Next Door is Second Look Studio Yoga and Inspired Coumunity. This space holds classes, promotes art, and encourages a healthy body, mind, and spirit.

Culpeper has something for everyone and is evolving everyday. An hours drive away to Chalottesvile and Lurray Caverns is a bonus. Come vist us.

Magickal Things on Locust Street in a winter wonder land December 20 2009

Well the Solstice approaches and so much has happened in just a few short months. I have a new nieghbor at the Medical Arts Building Secondlook Studio Yoga and Ispired Community. they have all sorts of classes and community based events. Yeah stuff
happening next door to me yay!

I am celebrating the Solstice begining at Noon Monday the 21st. This is a small store so we have to follow fire codes. My town is quite wonderful as well. And 3hr parking is right across the srteet. At 7pm Second Look Studio will be doing yoga in honor of the solstice.

happenings as of lately/ some future tripping September 03 2009

Wow, this season has been busy busy busy. Starting the new venture of a real location and continuing to to do festivals has been quite a juggle this summer. Oh yeah and family always comes first in my life so they win everytime. But I’m glad they win :).

Magickal Things on 121 suite 117 West locust Street Culpeper Virginia has been great for inspiration and creation. Due to festival scheduling I have not been able to stay open every weekend. I made this choice to be cost effective and because I have not gone into full gear advertising myself. So far it is a studio art boutique that also offers some metaphisical items like crystals and vintage books and incense and candles. I am also featuring some select items from other local artists. I have also introduced drums and other instuments. My shop by the way is not large at all. I make the most of the space I have and my generous lanlords have allowed me to spill my art and merchandise into the lobby during operational hours. So if you are looking for a cool little nook to enjoy exploring stop by. If you are looking for a boarders style metaphysical store that has lods of peeps like you well maybe in the future.

Honestly me keeping Magickal Things as a permanent location will depend upon support and finances from customers and the community of bohemians that like to keep something out of t he ordinary around. My current space does not accomdate say a drum circle or a dance class or a large class ritual. But in the future I may be able to secure a larger space, if the need arises. As for get togethers and gatherings I alsways have local and some distant local events listed on my website and advertised in my store wth flyers. I also distribute these flyers to other businesses in the community.

Some things I’d like to have in the future:
small meditation classes- shamanic jouney style
Natural Magick School- selections of nature based techniques and beliefs
drum circle- yeah I said it I wanna make noise or at least dance to it. It may be possible to use local culpeper facilities for such a thing. left free to the public there are many places we could use
get togethers with peeps of like open minds- we can do this at anytime in the existing community and support local busines to boot. I would hate to put a name on of this kinf=d of happening. the best word I can really think of when describing the local groovy peeps and freaks is bohemian-not really of any particular spiritual, not of any particular socio economic class, just creative open hearted people that want to spread light and love.

Oh and in the not so distant future I will be attending and vending at a Mabon Fetsival in standardsville and a Medieval fair in the Roanoke/Salem area. Come see at these events please, I try not to go to events that suck because I like to have a good time :)!

Special Note to other crafters and wholesalers April 17 2009

I do appreciate offers products and crafts but this site is here to promote mostly my art and creations. I encourage any other artist to do there thing and create there own site. So many tools are now available to produce a quality web page with no cost at all. i did this site a few years ago with the help of BA21.us. There are many web designers out there with talent who could help you be you. I am alsways willing to link up and mention other artist and support them.

To wholesalers: Yes, I do have a store and vending venues, but i am the primary person who creates these products. I have no factory or apprentices it is all in home. I have very few items that I resell and those items are from companies that uphold my values for a greener earth and a social conscious relation with communities. Most of these companies are small and hand make each item and have a special energy about them. I do not resell items on my website, the website is for the promotion and enjoyment of my art. only at my retail venues do i use products not made by me. And yes i do sometimes carry items from artists that I have a personal conection, but that does not mean I am searching far and wide to purchase and consign items. i would like to stay pretty much an artist offering my stuff at a resonable price to people who enjoy it.

Magickal Things on Locust Street April 11 2009

It is true yes I open May 1st at a real location of my very own. This venture is very exciting for me to have a real space though it is very small. It is located in the medical arts Building, an Art Deco Style building, perfect for my art.

I will have all the things I have at my antique booth and possibly more t come from other artists. the artists featured in the store are very dear and close to me. I consider having their items an honor and even a favor because they have such good energy and dedication to humanity and the planet. I am not really taking portfolios or looking for artists to display in my shop i’m stiking close to those I really know well for now.

I will indeed have some retail items that I simply do not make. the belly dance gear is handmade in turkey and fairtrade. The inscense and love oils are made in this country. the sage is hand picked by a shaman in California. I will be carrying some things from gypsy rose, though limited because I have simular clothing. i will also carry some things from azure green though not a ton of stuff. i am registered with them so if anyone needs to order supplies from them I can do so. If it seems to be an item everybody wants well I can start to carry it.

Some things that I just dont carry are herbs and crystals. at least not at this time. I have mixed feeling about carrying crystals. I love them they are beautiful and if an artists has put them in their wands or other magickal art, then you will see them. However I am simply uncomfortable buying the stones and crystals wholesale. I don’t know where they come from and I am not that fond of mining. I have met many people who sell stones have great passion for them and do the mining tham selves and know these people to be honorable and reverant towards this process. And if the time comes that they would wish to deal through me then I would consider carrying their stones. With herbs I simply feel that we can find these at a store called herbal connection in culpeper and I do not wish to compete with a fellow merchant.

I will however have some specially charged mixes for magickal purposes. no there will not be love and money spells in my shop. only self love spells and recognition of abundance is but at your grasp if you have gratitude.

I am not allowed to do tarot card readings or palm readings in Culpeper it is in fact illegal to charge for fortune telling.. i may have some oracle cards and tarot decks for sale and you may do some of your own divination with tools in the store, but there is no charge and it your reading it not me.

If you seek healing, meditative guidance, or instruction on Earth based Spirituality we can do something privately scheduled at off store hours. A donation would be nice if I set time aside, though please understande that I am not permited to smudge or burn inscense in the buildin i rent in.

The primary purpose of this shop is to share art and hand made items that have a spiritual bend to them. I look foward to meeting new people and growing in time. fetsivals are still in my future. The store will either have someone watching it on those occasions or I will need to close at those times.

May 1st is the opening date I will be in there though please tolerate adjustments and settling. culpeper is als having a street Festival that weekend google “CULPEPER DAY” to find out when. Also I will be offering face painting on appoitment basis only. I really like to ive each child the time they deserve when this is done for them.

As you may know from a previous article “MOLDY MUSHROOM TENT” I had problems with my homemade umbrella tent. I could not let go of the idea. With some left over pieces and some online purchases I was able to make a waterproof tent.

first I purchased a new patio umbrella. I was able to find one on sale and it even had solar charged lights. I had a base from the old tent. Because patio umbrellas are for shade i had to use a waterproof cover. I had one left over from a pop up with a broken frame. I used white rope to make tassles at each corner to give a round effect. This umbrella was nine ft across so I was able to get blue ez up sides I ordered online. I pinned shear curtains to the umbrella. So construction wise its pretty simple. Attach canopy to top ove umbrella. Pin shears to umbrella top. The shears help to break up the blue and give a screened porch effect when blue sides are down. Only attach blue sides after umbrella is raise. Though these sides are lighter than canvas they are to heavy for the mechanism that cranks the umbrella. Use the tielines from the canopy to anchor. You can stake down the center base. and use sandbags to help balance and wieght things down on windy days. The ground is your floor in this tent. Use floor cloth if you like but the sides do not tuck under so be prepared for moisture! In otherwoords use a cot. I was comfortable on a warm night. And this annex kept me dry on some very rainy festivals. Not to mention it make a great dressing room for customers. And it matched my merchant tent.

What's ahead for Magickal Things October 13 2008

well Festival season is over for me until next season. Unless I find an indoor event. I had fun, challenging times, and grew a bit more in many ways. Hopefully wisdom has prevailed in my choices for the year ahead. I had very little time to collect pictures of this years fairs. www.medievalfantasies.com has photos of some of my displays this year. I have refined my tent a bit and added a round anex tent. Adding to the fair themes.

This year I was in 12 festivals and plan to do more next year. i n september I opened a Mini store in Culpeper. My booth is in Culpeper Antique Market on Main Street. And now my focus turns my mini Store.

This season I introduce some belly Dance gear, handyed cottons, inscense, sage, and other things I just dont do. I try to research each company to provide these items. Many are manufactured or hand made in the united states. Other companies that I use give back to the communities that they manufacture in. So yeah I guess I’m trying to be green. I’m also just making my best effort to be responsible.

All these items will now be featured in my mini store along with my artwear activewear, jewlry, bohemians shirts skirts and and jackets hand dyed and with graphix art.. Also I have my original art, phototgraphy, and art dolls.so I am sorry if the booth is packed. I will rotated much merchandise in the booth. So look foward to new displays each month!,

I also look foward to painting and drawing again in the coming months and holidays. Laugh love live and learn.

My Moldy Mushroom Tent RIP at Foamhenge September 09 2008

I have done many festivals this year. Among them were Blueridge Beltane, insane with rain, The Virginia Renaissance Fair, The Stone Tower glen at the Natural Chimneys, and The Enchanted Fair at Foamhenge. This year of Fairs has been interesting and very challenging at times. My goal was to have a homemade adapted jury rigged sort of tent as my gypsy tent separate from my tree merchant tent. Kinda achieved it?

I used a patio umbrella and drop cloths for panting and hand sewed the entire thing with a needle and thread.


At the Stone Tower Glen realized I needed a top covering from the rain. I happened to have a canopy handy. I also realized the bottom was not safe from water with a tarp. Everything got wet! I had to dry it all out. So I thought no big deal. I’ll just use it for shade and rain shelter. At foamhenge I got out my moldy tent eww.

Maybe the sun would bleach the mildew. Then upon raising the umbrella one of the spokes broke. Unable to bear the weight of the heavy fabric. I took back what looked like a collasal squid.


Dragging that dead moldy mushroom tent around made me realize I would need an entire tribe to resurrect this thin with poles. So Rest In Peace moldy Mushroom Tent.

I still have a dream of creating a tent with lighter fabric. A magickal tent that pops up like a fashionable umbrella.

Nancy Diamond August 20 2008

Recently a wonderful person and fellow artist was killed in a drunk driving accident. This death has hit the very soul of the art group I have been with for the last ten years.

Nancy Diamond was a creative funky Artist who was known for her bright colors and endless depictions of cats. I once did a craft festival with her and she had many of her anotomically corect paper mache cats.One of her creations wound up on the whitehouse christmas tree during the clinton administration. She was quite proud of having her one her cat ornaments on the tree. She was an incredibly humorous woman with a bright honest personality. A sprite like lady. Her husband was also killed in the accident. He also enjoyed art and had many creations of his own.

On there way back from visiting family in Michigan celebrating her husband’s 80th birthday. Their car was struck. I was told they died instantly. Everyone in the art group loved nancy and a few lived near her. I can only imagine the sorrow of having such a great friend who you see daily no longer being around.

I’ll miss you Nancy and I thnk you for thinking outside the box and being so incredible.

I can only imagine what it is like to travel to the places and ledgends that inspire me. From Dublin to Dakkar I am inspired and hipnotized by the art and beauty I see. From Raw Art to fine art we are inspired by the same things: The human experience on this great big planet and our interactions with it expressed in the most imaginative ways possible. When you gaze upon a societies art you gaze upon it’s expressive soul.

This week my focus will be on the clothing. The art graphix designs are finished and ready to be put on the bohemian /renwear. This year I have nice peasant and gypsie blouses with some great dresses for girls. There will be a limited number of faux jewel embelished ensembles. Some in chiffon and a line of fantastic black clothings with simple tasteful embelishments. I’m just saying we will have a magickal little black dress and a long black dress. These items can be customized for you. I will have some creations at the fairs.

So if ya see something ya like buy it because I am not going to repeat designs unless a custom order is placed. What oes this mean? It means you are getting things that are just for you, independent creations. This is not mass marketed clothing. I do not whole sale presently. And currently each peice is created by me and me alone. My activewear is from an american owned and operated . My bohemian. clothing that I embelish is from a reputable blanks company. Small in size.

Any jewelry is made strictly by me. And I tend not to want to repeat designs. So if you see it and like buy it.

I will be face painting at some of the fairs this year but not all. I will have fairy wings, dragon wings , crowns, masks, and possibly paper swords for children to decorate this year. All fees for this child centered activities is under 5 dollars. I’m a parent I know it’s expessive to entertain kids. I also truly enjoy allowing others to create and experience art. Most of the money goes back into the supplies and I’m fine with that. When you can create on your own it is worth every penny.

I will also have two belly dance ensembles. They are beautiful, no they are not my creations but very worthy for their dazzling sensual style.

Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.
The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl’s name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine’s Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.
